Cliff Hog

The Cliff Hog and Nuclear Hog are hostile creatures that can be encountered while exploring. They have a melee charging attack, as well as a rock-throwing ranged attack.

The Nuclear Hog is a stronger variant of the Cliff Hog. It is distinguished by a green glow over its body, and has more health and emits a passive radiation effect. The radiation intensity fills the radiation bar completely when standing up close.

Behavior

Both the Cliff and Nuclear Hog can be mostly found patrolling Crash Sites, Power Slugs and artifacts, as well as entrances to late-game areas of the game, such as the Red Bamboo Fields. The Cliff Hog can typically be found alone or in groups of two, whereas the Nuclear Hog can typically be found alone.

Cliff Hog

  • Higher health, damage, size, and speed relative to the Alpha Hog
  • Basic Hog Charge attack, with increased speed and damage
  • New Rock Throw attack, which launches a rock at a distant or unreachable target
  • New Plow Charge attack, which continually pushes and deals damage to the target

Nuclear Hog

  • Higher health, damage, size, and speed relative to the Cliff Hog
  • Basic Hog Charge attack, with increased speed and damage
  • New Rock Throw attack, which launches a rock at a distant or unreachable target
  • New Plow Charge attack, which continually pushes and deals damage to the target
  • Passive Radiation Damage Area of Effect (AoE)

Spawning

Both the Cliff and Nuclear Hog spawn singularly, and can be prevented from spawning by using creature respawn prevention methods.

Combat

A viable strategy is stunning the hog using a  Rebar Gun with  Stun Rebar, then attacking it from the side using a  Xeno-Basher. This prevents it from attacking immediately after the stun wears off.

The  Rifle will not kill even the weaker Cliff Hog in one reload before it charges to the player. Using  Nobelisks is also too slow, with the exception of  Nuke Nobelisks, which may however hurt you while detonating.

If the hog is near a tall cliff, throwing it off using a  Pulse Nobelisks might allow avoiding the fight entirely, although this is a bit risky and requires the hog to be in the right location.

If flying over the charge,  Turbofuel is required for the  Jetpack. Wearing a  Hazmat Suit nullifies the radiation damage from Nuclear Hogs while filters last.

Trivia

  • On a weekly dev stream, Snutt named the Nuclear Hog seen at the end of the Titan forest Teaser video 'Jeff'.[1]
  • During the 2024 April Fools Special Event the both the Cliff Hog and Nuclear Hog first appeared in the shape (but not the look) of the Walker.
